A Community Led By God's Love

As a community of faith led by God's love, Christ's example, and the Holy Spirit's presence, we, the congregation of St. John's United Church of Christ of Richmond, Virginia, declare ourselves to be Open and Affirming. Recognizing that people desire to bring their whole selves to the church, this congregation offers extravagant welcome and hospitality to everyone as we strive to embrace, without limits, differences in age; education; faith journey; family structure; gender; marital status; mental and physical health and ability; racial and cultural identity and background; sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression; and socioeconomic circumstance. With God's grace, we invite all into the full life and ministry of the church, including worship, sacraments, rites, responsibilities, and leadership, as we celebrate the blessings, joys, and challenges of life in Christ.

Community Players

St. John's Community Players was established in 2006 by Anita and Tony Sharpenstein.

As well as bringing joy to our patrons, our performances are fundraisers for St. John's UCC and include musical cabarets and an annual holiday show for adult and child performances. We also support local outreach with the St. John's Players Strolling Cabaret.

Past productions have included small cast musicals and musical reviews presented both in the St. John's UCC sanctuary and on our black box theatre stage.

UCC Connection

St. John's UCC is a member of the United Church of Christ. We are devoted to the commitments of the UCC. As a community of faith centered in Jesus Christ, we seek guidance and direction through the Holy Spirit to demonstrate God's love to all people through words and deeds. We further affirm our dedication to the principles of the United Church of Christ:

  • Christian (Declaring ourselves to be a part of the body of Christ)
  • Reformed (Confessing the authority of one triune God)
  • Congregational (Covenanting emphasizing trustful relationships rather than legal agreements)
  • Evangelical (Sharing the Good News of God's love revealed with power in Jesus Christ)

St. John's extends an Extravagant Welcome to You! While we practice responsible freedom as individual members, to believe and act following our perception of God's will for our lives, we are called to live in a loving covenantal relationship with one another – gathering in communities of faith, congregations of believers, and local churches.
